A Definite London Must See Hyde Park One of the things that I am looking forward to doing  in London is seeing its world-renowned parks.  There is a feeling of amusement and relaxation that comes from being in a park. These big green spaces can bring out the child in anyone. I, for one, get the sudden urge to curl my toes on the ground while staring at the sky or reading a book, or just feel like running out into the open. The childhood association of parks with playtime has definitely been carried on to our adult life as one of the simplest yet most lovely ways to spend our downtime. It’s no wonder that people flock to the Royal Parks of London. Hyde Park in particular seems to be a favorite among many. It is undoubtedly one of the greatest city parks in the world, with its vast size of 350 acres featuring a large lake, a meadow, flower garden, and immense greenery that can make you feel like it is a scene straight out of a story book. Whether you are looking to have a picnic with your loved one or a have a fun game with your friends and family, there is something for everyone in Hyde Park. There are tennis courts, tracks for horse riding, a playground, and a couple of lakeside restaurants. It is also situated between Notting Hill and Kensington, two fancy parts of London, which makes the properties around it a grand sight to behold. There are even 4 star hotels in Hyde Park that can make you feel quite fancy if you want to indulge in the atmosphere that this opulent venue gives off. Depending on the season, a variety of concerts and other open air events are held in this park throughout the year. You’ll find something to enjoy here whether you are a music fan looking to see it all from up and coming bands to prominent musical acts like the Rolling Stones, or one to simply sit and listen to some of London’s most vocal orators at the Speaker’s Corner every Sunday. During the colder months,  I was told  that simply admiring its important landmarks and statues can be a treat.  You can see the beautiful  Diana Memorial Fountain or the  18ft bronze statue of Achilles, the Greek hero of the Trojan War, and many more.  There is even ice-skating late in the year! That being said, this is definitely a place that I am putting in my to-do list for London.  With life passing by in such a rush because of the responsibilities of everyday life,  I think it is healthy to every once in a while rekindle the wonder and amusement of your inner  child, even if its just as simple as lying on the grass in a beautiful park. The Institute for Public Policy Research, however, says that “despite the growing capability of robots and artificial intelligence (AI), we are not on the cusp of a ‘post-human’ economy.” IPPR suggests that an estimated 60 percent of occupations have at least 30 percent of activities which could be automated with already-proven technologies. As tasks are automated, work is likely to be redefined, focusing on areas of human comparative advantage over machines. The CIPD point out that “new technology has changed many more jobs than it has destroyed, and it does not destroy work. Overall, the biggest advanced industrialized economies have between them created over 50 million jobs, a rise of nearly 20 percent, over the past 20 years despite huge economic and technological disruptions.” Challenge, change, and competition There is no doubt that new technologies, ‘disruptive’ technology and innovation, and the risks associated with them, including skills shortages, are hot topics for HR professionals. We live in exciting times, where digitization and how to move from what we have now into the brave new digital world are an over-arching concern for HR directors. However, in many organizations, there  are those who don’t recognize the pace of technological change and how it is impacting business models and the competitive landscape. At 10Eighty we think it’s important that HR see AI and technological change as an inspiration with regards to innovation and productivity. The most successful companies will be those that are in step with technological change. What’s needed is a nimble and flexible organizational culture, and HR should see it as challenging and exciting rather than worrying. The CIPD suggests that “a key test for the future will be whether we can create resilient and effective structures and practices in the workplace and beyond to minimize the adverse impacts and maximize the benefits.” The way we work will change; while AI is unlikely to displace human labor, it is going to change the labor market, our occupations and the type of work tasks we perform. The automation of work, rather than occupations, has implications for all of us. Currently, nearly half of all time spent at work in advanced economies is on tasks involving the collection and processing of data, or predictable physical activities. These are the tasks most likely to be automated, leaving people to focus on activities such as managing and developing people, interaction, collaboration, and communication, creative and caring work and unpredictable physical activity. Top notch tools AI, predictive analytics, and machine learning, in which algorithms make predictions about data, are starting to make an impact on HR in terms of candidate search and selection, and also predicting learning retention. Some headhunters use machine learning to identify passive candidates through their online behavior and in learning and development, professionals now use algorithms to identify the topics that people would like to learn more about. In the meantime, chatbot technology is transforming areas such as induction and benefits administration especially when employees are looking for basic information. Chatbots are able to interact with multiple employees simultaneously, offering a self-service online HR database; such technology can save time and increase functional accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness. In short AI tools will help HR professionals with better, faster and more accurate tools. HR needs to work with senior leadership to ensure they understand the implications and to make a robust business case for introducing new technology and the benefits of deployment for employees and the organization.

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese The True Cost of an Arrogant Boss Do you have a boss who discredits the ideas of others while claiming to have superior ideas? Does your boss blame other people and refuse to take personal responsibility for anything? Does your boss reject feedback? If so, you have all the makings of an arrogant boss, someone who can drag down an organization with his or her sense of superiority in all things. Researchers at the University of Akron and Michigan State University have developed what they call the Workplace Arrogance Scale, which they claim can identify an arrogant boss. The 22-point scale will be introduced next week at the American Psychological Association convention by industrial and organizational psychologist and professorStanley Silverman, dean of UAs Summit College and University College. The scale seeks to establish a way to measure managers so arrogance can be spotted early and stopped before it has bottom-line consequences, researchers say. Such an assessment may be necessary for many companies, as the arrogance of many corporate leaders in the last several years has led to billion-dollar losses and in some cases sent the executives to jail for illegal activities. In a recent issue of the Industrial-Organizational Psychologist, Silverman, along with researchers Russell E. Johnson, Nicole McConnell and Alison Carr, write that arrogance has run amock lately. They write that their research shows that arrogant employees have poorer performances, create greater stress for others and their behavior is likely to create a poisonous atmosphere. Such problems, they write, can lead to poorer customer satisfaction and loyalty, adversely affect a teams ability to work together and eventually hurt the bottom line. The problem becomes even worse when the arrogant employee is a supervisor or manager. For example, an arrogant manager is less likely to welcome or solicit feedback. Or, an arrogant manager is more likely to keep subordinates in a helpless position as he or she has authority over their promotions or opportunities. Such bosses are also much less likely to offering mentoring or coaching, leading to a less-developed team. Arrogant managers are therefore more likely to pursue failing courses of action that could otherwise have been prevented. Arrogant behavior can be an especially challenging problem to deal with due to the fact that arrogant individuals consider their own behavior acceptable and thus do not monitor their own actions when interacting with others, they write. While some may believe that arrogance is a personality trait, the researchers characterize it as a series of behaviors intended to exaggerate a persons sense of superiority by disparaging others. Despite the apparent confidence of those engaging in arrogant behavior, research suggests that it is actually a defensive display occurring partially in response to low self-confidence. Thus, performance claims by confident individuals are based in reality, but those of arrogant individuals are not, they write. The researchers say that arrogant bosses can be reformed, if theyre open to coaching and feedback to change their behavior. Their awareness of their behavior is key, which is why the researchers say the new scale is so important. Once the arrogance is determined, then an action plan can be developed to help arrogant managers hone their leadership skills. That can help boost their self confidence and snuff out self doubt so they can rely on confidence thats authentic, they write. Although it is true that some arrogant leaders have experienced considerable success, we argue that these individuals may have been even more effective sans the arrogant behavior. Interactions with others in the organization may have been more successful, more effective communication could have taken place, and performance could have been even more impressive if arrogance had been curtailed early on, they conclude. Silverman says one way to protect yourself is to always make sure you understand your role clearly in an organization and have the parameters of your duties in writing.
